Thomas More's Utopia
[Alexander
[Obverse].
Mint mark , Assay mark, Treasury mark, cashier mark, Private mark
A Brief History of Coinage: and Thomas More's Utopia
Just as it is necessary to know the origin before engaging
with people, it is equally important to understand the origin of the object of
this hobby before indulging in it. History will provide valuable insights into
why this is important today.
It is well known that before the introduction of the
currency system, a "barter system" was in place. Consider the Utopian
society imagined by the intellectual and philosopher Thomas More. In Utopia,
there was no need for money, as all goods were centrally stored and accessible
to citizens. Basic survival needs such as shelter, food, and healthcare were
communally generated and readily available.
However, as time progressed and various industries like
animal husbandry, weaving, transportation, and crop production expanded, the
limitations of the barter system started to exert pressure. When people had the
opportunity to enjoy a variety of goods, the exchange of one type of product
for another to fulfil new needs and requirements became impractical. For
instance, a person who needed grain for a meal but only had cattle would not
want to sell a part of their beloved cow. Moreover, the person buying the meat
might not even need it, maybe he would be looking for salt or fabric instead.
Since then, the practice of trading other goods which are not
easily available began. In history, we find that items such as salt, beans, metal
objects, tobacco, plant seeds, seashells etc., took the place of currency
during different periods. However, the coins and notes we see today appeared
much later when the needs of weight and transportation once again pressured
society. Later, various economical and socio-political events accelerated the
evolution of digital currencies.
Featuring image on coins:
Around 1000 BC in ancient Greece, when precious metals such
as gold and silver began to be used as a form of payment, pure gold and silver
pieces were not popular due to their fragile nature. As a result, Electrum
emerged, providing both stability and complexity for businessmen. However, this
meant that each piece had to be measured during transactions to determine the
proportion of precious metal and alloy used.
Start of denominations on coins:
To address this challenge, various marks were punched onto
each piece to indicate their weight and accuracy, laying the foundation for the
present concept of "denomination." Early engraving was done using a
blunt nail, and the unique nails of each business ensured the pieces were
distinguishable. Over time, engraving evolved to flat metal discs, making it
easier to carve motifs like lion's heads, cow's heads, and gods' heads using a
hammered nail.
Designating one side as Head/Obverse and the other side
as Tail/Reverse:
Initially, rulers' heads were not prominently featured on
coins. Instead, god/goddess pictograms were main theme. However, after
Alexander the Great's death, his portrait began appearing on coins since he was
often referred to as a god. This marked the beginning of using portraits of
ruling figures on coins and, later, on both coins and notes. As this motif
first appeared on the side with various heads, it came to be called the [Head]
or [Obverse] side.
Carving with such a blunt tool would have flattened the
metal disc and roughened it. As a result, the engraving on the front side began
to suffer. This is the reason why early coins were uniface. Over time markings
like mint marks, assay marks, treasury marks, and private marks were added to
the back of coins, while the front featured images of God and Goddess on one
side and towns, empires, and other carvings on the other side, known as the
[Reverse] today.
Transition from shape to portrait:
The transition from head shape to elaborate pictures began
during the Middle Ages when engravings and paintings started reflecting
reality. The Renaissance furthered this trend with a focus on literary
practice, scientific rigor, and realism. By the mid-14th century, coins began
featuring images more than portraits, a trend that continued and gained
prominence in banknotes during the mid-19th century, marking the onset of
realism.
Portrait of a living or dead:
In the early days, geographical entities were often
monarchies, resulting in portraits of kings and queens appearing on coins.
However, after the USA gained independence from the monarchy in 1776, the first
American president, George Washington, declined to have his portrait on coins
out of respect for democracy. Since then, the tradition of featuring a person's
portrait on the notes and coins of democratic countries began only after the
individual's passing.
Older coins random in size:
One of the two main methods of coin making is casting and
the other is die casting. This was the main process of early coinage, simply
extracting the metal from the mine and then casting it into round discs. From
which comparable round left regular shaped coins were obtained. But due to
casting, the motif was not subtle.
Later, during the use of precious metal for coins, thin
sheets of that metal were cut with a die (mould) to make coin discs. Then parts
were cut from their surroundings for proper weight. When each coin was
correctly weighted, they were then heated and placed between two dies and
punched to form the design/motif. In that case the coin would have become a
little flat/rough due to the pressure of the hammer. Coins made in this process
had very fine motifs which later led to the practice of portraits as well as
inscriptions on coins.
Another factor that affects this phenomenon is that when the
use of precious metals in coins was common, many people used to rub the edges
of the coins to remove small pieces, and continue the coins in the market. As a
result, not only did the original coin size change over time, but the weight
also changed. But to control the unfair work of extracting small pieces by
rubbing, the first Milling and Graining machine was used around 1662. which
engraves geometric grooves around the edge of the coin. As a result, if someone
rubs it, it is easy to understand. And uniformity comes in the shape of the
coin.
